NRA Basic Metallic Cartridge Reloading Course

The NRA Basic Metallic Cartridge Reloading Course is designed to teach beginning reloaders the foundational knowledge, skills, and safe attitude necessary to reload metallic (centerfire) cartridges. It’s targeted at those with little or no prior reloading experience.
Course Content

Students receive instruction and training on the following core areas:


1. Introduction to Reloading & Safety

-Understanding safety practices and the responsibilities of reloading.


2. Centerfire Cartridge Components

-Learn what makes up a metallic cartridge (cases, primers, powder, bullets).


3. Using the Reloading Manual & Reloading Data

-How to read manuals, select appropriate load data, and interpret ballistics tables.


4. Reloading Equipment Overview

-Introduction to presses, dies, scales, and other tools used in reloading.


5.The Metallic Cartridge Reloading Process

-Step-by-step explanation of how metallic cartridges are reloaded safely.


6. Practical Exercises / Hands-On Demo

-Some instructors include demonstrations or supervised hands-on exercises on equipment set-up and basic reloading techniques.


7. Course Review and Examination

-A brief exam testing your understanding of key topics

-Basic Reloading Student Exam

-Course Completion Certificate

-Additional program brochures or evaluation forms


Course completion shows you’ve learned the basics of safe metallic cartridge reloading.

Course Requirements

Minimum Age:

-You must be at least 18 years old to take the course.


Equipment:


- You will need a notebook, pens (or pencils) and a highlighter .  


Duration:


-The course generally takes 8 hours.

Certification

-Upon successful completion, participants often receive a certificate from the NRA acknowledging their proficiency in reloading rifle (centerfire) and pistol ammunition.

The course is often the first step for individuals interested in hunting or other shooting sports but have little experience with a fire arm.  This course is not a substitute for a hunters safety course.
