NRA Basic Pistol Course

The NRA Basic Pistol Course is a comprehensive training program offered by the National Rifle Association designed to teach new shooters the basic skills and knowledge needed to safely handle and shoot a pistol. The course is suitable for beginners or those looking to refresh their skills.
Course Contents


1. Introduction to Firearms

-Basic types of pistols (revolvers, semi-automatics).

-How pistols work (basic mechanics).

2. Safety Procedures

-The NRA’s 3 Fundamental Rules of Gun Safety:

1. Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.

2. Keep your finger off the trigger until you're ready to shoot.

3. Always keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.

-Understanding gun storage and safety in your home.

-How to handle a firearm safely when loading, unloading, and storing.

3. Ammunition Basics

-Types of ammunition.

-How to safely handle and store ammunition.

-How ammunition interacts with the pistol.

4. Shooting Fundamentals

-Grip, stance, and aiming

-How to properly aim, line up sights, and take a shot

-How to control recoil and prevent flinching.

5. Pistol Maintenance

-How to clean and care for your pistol.

-Basic parts of the pistol and how they work together.

6. Live Fire Practice

-Hands-on range time where you will practice shooting under the supervision of certified instructors.

-Emphasis on safety while firing and getting comfortable with the gun's action.

7. Basic Marksmanship
-Introduction to accuracy, how to aim and shoot with precision
-Understanding target placement and shooting techniques

Course Requirements

Minimum Age:

-Typically, you need to be at least 18 years old to take the course. However, minors can sometimes participate with parental consent.


Equipment:


-This course recommends you have your own firearm, ammunition, eye protection and ear protection.  If you don't have a firearm make arrangements with the instructor and see if a loaner is available.  


Duration:


-The course generally takes 8 hours, including both classroom instruction and range time.

Certification

-Upon successful completion, participants often receive a certificate from the NRA acknowledging their proficiency in safe pistol handling and shooting basics.

The course is often the first step for individuals interested in obtaining their concealed carry permit in many states, though it is not a legal requirement for all states.
