Gun Appraisals

Did you just inherit an old Walther P38 pistol or a newer old shotgun you don’t know much about it, you have no idea what it’s worth? Prices can vary based on the condition, rarity, provenance and other factors. An accurate and knowledgeable appraisal can help you understand what you have and what it would bring on the open market.

What are the characteristics that contribute to the value of a firearm? Some questions we ask are: What is it? Who made it? When was it made? Were there many of this type of firearm manufactured? Is the finish original? What condition is it in? Are the parts all original to the gun? Are there any special markings? All these features have an impact on value. Often, more important than the gun itself is its history, or provenance. Was it owned by a historical figure? Was it used in a well-known historical event?

Provenance can add substantially to the value of a firearm, even if it was not owned by someone famous. For example, a factory letter stating where a rifle was shipped, on what
date, and what features it was shipped with, can significantly increase the selling price of an antique rifle. Or, a simple ‘capture paper’, which was written permission to bring a pistol home as a souvenir from WWII, can add significantly to the value of even a common pistol or rifle.

Coin Appraisals

Coins are very similar. The condition and the rarity are essential to figuring out the value. With Bar-K we are trained to evaluate each coin and detect many of the indicators of counterfeit coins.

On coin appraisals if the item has an estimated value over $100, we will write an appraisal sheet for that item (or set of coins). Lesser valued items will be evaluated on a separate list to conserve the cost of the appraisal.
